Jan. 24, 26, 27: Rock, brass, Broadway in concerts at WSU

PULLMAN, Wash. – Rock fusion, brass and Broadway will each take a turn at Washington State University this week in Faculty Artist Series concerts that support student scholarships in the School of Music.

The WSU Brass Quintet will perform at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, in Bryan Hall. At 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, in Kimbrough Hall, Snider and Friends will present new arrangements and compositions of rock and fusion music from the 1950s to today. And the vocal faculty ensemble Cantiamo will sing tunes “From Broadway with Love and Laughter” at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, in Bryan Hall.

Tickets will be available in the lobby 30 minutes before each concert. WSU students will be admitted free with ID; tickets for non-WSU students and senior citizens 60 and older will cost $5, and general admission will be $10.

* The WSU Brass Quintet, Crimson Brass Trio and other School of Music Faculty will present Jan Koetsier’s “Brass Quintet, Opus 65,” trios by Frigyes Hidas and Anton Reicha and William Kraft’s “Nonet for Brass and Percussion.” Artists will include David Turnbull, trumpet; Matthew Glover, trumpet; Martin King, horn; Sarah Miller, trombone; Christopher Dickey, tuba; Dave Jarvis, Scott Blasco, Troy Bennefield and Brent Edwards, percussion; and Danh Pham, conductor.

* WSU faculty Dave Snider will perform rock and fusion with the Brad Ard Jazz Combo and members the WSU faculty ensemble Jazz Northwest. Works will include: “Frankenstein,” the first funk/fusion instrumental to reach No. 1 on the pop charts; Jeff Beck’s medium rock blues groove “Lead Boots;” Dizzy Gillespie’s Afro-Cuban “Tanga;” Vince Guaraldi’s “Linus and Lucy” jazz piano composition done as a bass solo; Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing;” John Coltrane’s “Giant Steps” and “Jamaica Farewell” with steel drums.

The Brad Ard Jazz Combo is a new group that includes faculty members Ard, guitar; Snider, electric bass; and Mindy Ard, percussion, as well as local jazz drummer Dan Smith.

* Cantiamo will perform solos and small ensembles from Broadway shows including “The Music Man,” “The King and I,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” “The Sound of Music,” “The Secret Garden” and “Beauty and the Beast.”
