Jan. 9: Farmers gain skills in business planning, marketing

farm-businessEVERETT, Wash. – The course Agricultural Entrepreneurship and Farm Business Planning will be simulcast 5:30-8:30 p.m. Mondays Jan. 9-March 20 in Gray Wolf Hall at Everett Community College and in Carnation Farm’s Alpine Room, 28901 NE Carnation Farm Rd., Carnation, Wash., as part of Washington State University Extension’s Cultivating Success series. Two Saturday seminars on focused topics will be Feb. 25 and March 4.

Class size is limited and pre-paid registration is required. Cost for the 12-week course is $300. Local guest speakers will include bankers, business professionals and farm owners talking about the financial and legal issues unique to farm-based businesses. Participants will be guided in developing a business plan they can use to help finance and direct a new enterprise or expand an existing farm.

Agriculture teacher and small farmer Holly Small will facilitate. She has developed, led and expanded Cultivating Success courses since 2009. A WSU graduate in animal science and agriculture economics with a master’s in agriculture education, she has worked for Northwest Farm Credit Services as a loan officer and the Nestle Regional Training Center at Carnation Farm as public relations and conference center manager.

The course is presented by WSU Snohomish and King county extensions in partnership with the Snohomish Conservation District.
