Alvarez Sanchez, Lima elected WSU Tri-Cities student leaders

RICHLAND, Wash. – Vanessa Alvarez Sanchez and Edward Lima Jr. are the newly elected president and vice president of the Associated Students of Washington State University Tri-Cities (ASWSUTC) for 2015-16.

“I am looking forward to working together with students, staff and faculty who are committed to making positive improvements to our campus,” said Alvarez Sanchez.

She is a graduate of Connell High School and a WSU Tri-Cities junior majoring in civil engineering.

Lima is a junior majoring in mechanical engineering and an international student from Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Alvarez Sanchez and Lima ran unopposed, collecting 100 percent of the vote to win the general election held Tuesday and Wednesday.

Alvarez Sanchez is an engineering mentor and GEAR UP alumni leadership academy leader. She has served as office of admissions student ambassador and ASWSUTC elections board chairperson. She said her departmental and student organizational experiences will provide a well-rounded background for her work as president.

Lima is ASWSUTC director of diversity and inclusion and participates in club sports men’s soccer. He has Lima served as ASWSUTC senator, office of career development staff and TRiO Student Support Services mentor. He said his ASWSUTC executive and legislative branches’ experiences will provide insight for his role as vice president.

College-specific senators elected were: Jeanne Morgan, agriculture, human and natural resource sciences; Yuliya Baranovskaya, business; Danielle Weaver, education; Israa Alshaikhli, arts and sciences; Jessica Leon, nursing; and Tyler Schrag and Grant Woods, undecided. One senatorial vacancy remains for the engineering and architecture.
