stem-camps-80RICHLAND, Wash. – Rockets will fill the sky this Friday, July 11, during the STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) camp at Washington State University Tri-Cities.

The 10 a.m. launch is the closing event of the weeklong Ultimate Flight day camp. It will take about 45 minutes for the students to launch their rockets. The two-stage, payload rockets were built by the students and can soar up to 1,000 feet.

Directions to Friday morning’s launch: Drive north on George Washington Way, pass Hanford High School and turn right at the WSU Tri-Cities sign onto the tree-lined Sprout Road. The rocket launch is on the grass on the right side. Park along the street.

• Physics of the Ninja, 2:30 p.m. – Campers will demonstrate what they learned about inertia, rotational momentum, mass, force and direction, all in the context of the Japanese historical period of the Ninja and using their new Ninja skills.

• Shark Tank, 3 p.m. – As part of the Design It camp, students spent the week connecting with expert designers from the community, refining a product and packaging, and developing a marketing concept that they are pitching to a panel of experienced entrepreneurs.

STEM camps at WSU Tri-Cities are providing fun, hands-on learning to students ages 10-14. Campers are engaged in safe, creative and challenging learning experiences with certified teachers to develop their enthusiasm and knowledge in the STEM areas.

This week was the first of four STEM camps being held at WSU Tri-Cities through July. Certified teachers and local professionals lead the weeklong sessions. Other camp themes will include Science of Survival, Cracking the Human Code, Call of the Wild, Building Big™, Power the Future and CSI Science.
