PULLMAN, Wash. –  Alyssa Norris, a WSU Honors College senior majoring in civil engineering, has been appointed by Gov. Jay Inslee as the student member of the Washington State University Board of Regents for the 2017-18 academic year.

“It’s a delight to welcome Alyssa to the board,” said WSU President Kirk Schulz. “She brings proven leadership skills to the position and has served as a articulate voice for students in several capacities. I look forward to collaborating with her during the year ahead.”

Norris served as a senator for the WSU student government (ASWSU) and as president of both the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), and the Harold Frank Engineering Entrepreneurship Institute on the Pullman campus last academic year. She plans to minor in mathematics and ethics, and graduate with a certificate in East Asia Studies.

As student regent, Norris will strive to communicate regularly with WSU students systemwide, keeping them informed about important university developments. She also plans to emphasize student safety issues at all campuses.

“I love WSU and being a member of the Cougar family,” Norris said. “I am honored to have the opportunity to work with, represent and serve students in this capacity. I want to make this university even better than it already is, for students who attend WSU now, and for those who will attend in the future.”

Norris was a finalist for the prestigious national Harry S. Truman scholarship during her junior year. Last year she also was a National Academy of Engineering Grand Challenges Summit participant and the Outstanding Junior in the WSU Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture. In addition, she was awarded the WSU President’s Leadership and Engagement Award of Distinction.

Effective July 1, Norris’ appointment will run through June 30, 2018. She succeeds outgoing student regent Narek Daniyelyan.

The WSU Board of Regents is the university’s governing body. The board consists of 10 members, one of whom is a student.
