The Seattle Times – The solution is straightforward: Establish an additional medical school in Washington. Our group, the Washington Alliance of Teaching Physicians, has been meeting with and educating legislators for the past two years about the very real need for an additional Washington medical school. In a 2013 letter, we asked for support from Gov. Jay Inslee before Washington State University commissioned a feasibility study about starting a new school.

Scientific American – “It’s impossible to say what exposure at these levels means for humans,” said study coauthor Pat Hunt, a geneticist at the Washington State University. “There’s been so little research on these compounds that we don’t have a good handle on how we’re even exposed.”

The Globe and Mail – There has been a lack of cultural sensitivity and incorporation of local knowledge, leadership and expertise in current Ebola control efforts. As Barry Hewlett, an anthropologist who has worked with the WHO in fighting Ebola has noted, mistakes from past epidemics are being repeated as none of the medical organizations involved employ permanent medical anthropologists or other persons deeply familiar with local culture.
