PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State University faculty members who mentor students doing research, pursuing scholarship and engaging in creative activities – collectively defined as “research” – are asked to support students who want to participate in the second annual Showcase for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (SURCA). It will take place the afternoon of Friday, March 29, on the Pullman campus.
The website at http://surca.wsu.edu offers the online application and information about SURCA. It is the only undergraduate research event open to all WSU students, in every grade, from all majors. Oral and poster presentations are scheduled noon-5 p.m. in the CUB ballrooms.
Feb. 15 is the deadline for applications.
SURCA is part of WSU Showcase, which also includes Academic Showcase, the Distinguished Faculty Address and the Celebrating Excellence Banquet. Students presenting posters may also choose to participate in the morning Academic Showcase; applications for it close on Jan. 29.
At last year’s first SURCA, around 150 students in many disciplines described their faculty-mentored research. Thirty-nine prizes were awarded to 44 students and one laboratory. The 2012 abstract book and awardee information are detailed on the SURCA website.
“SURCA is open to all students from every campus,” said Shelley Pressley, director of undergraduate research – a program in the University College at WSU, host of the event. “At SURCA 2013, students from the Global Campus will participate for the first time, making virtual presentations to judges and visitors in Pullman.”
