WSU alumni saves brother with remarkable bean-shaped gift

PULLMAN, Wash. – Amy Smith, a Washington State University alumnus, gave her brother a gift that will be difficult to top — another birthday.

Just before the start of her senior year, Smith was informed that her brother’s kidneys were failing and would require a transplant. His best chance of survival came from a kidney donated from within the family. Test showed Smith would be a perfect match.

Now, twenty years later, Smith and her brother still celebrate his other birthday every Dec. 23.
