Angry Politics: The Case for Civility?
Americans today are more deeply divided over the role of government than at any time since the 1930s.
In the current climate, how is it possible to reconcile deeply held convictions and spirited debate in our politics, while also maintaining the common bonds of citizenship? Does democracy require certain norms of civility or can a degree of incivility actually strengthen our democratic institutions?
Cornell Clayton is Professor of Political Science in the WSU School of Politics, Philosophy, and Public Affairs, and the Director of the Foley Institute. He also is currently co-editor of Political Research Quarterly.
