Environmental research, education the focus at CEREO meeting

PULLMAN, Wash. – Researchers, educators and government and industry partners will discuss environmental research activities at Washington State University at a free, public summit Oct. 13-14 in Pullman.

Panel discussions and presentations on topics such as water use in the Columbia basin, crop management, forest stewardship and livable and sustainable communities will be part of the annual summit and external advisory board meeting of the WSU Center for Environmental Research, Education and Outreach (CEREO).
The weekend will include tours of WSU’s Laboratory for Atmospheric Research, Stable Isotope Core Laboratory and Cook Agronomy Farm.

CEREO came about in 2006 as part of a faculty-led effort to create an interdisciplinary center for environmental research and education. The center has worked to foster high quality environmental research, collaborative grant proposals and outreach, interactions with Washington schools, and a roadmap for prospective students interested in environmental studies within the WSU system.

CEREO faculty members have taken leadership roles in a number of significant, interdisciplinary and inter-institutional research efforts, including the U.S. Department of Agriculture-funded Regional Approaches to Climate Change (REACCH), the National Science Foundation’s Nitrogen Systems: Policy-oriented Integrated Research and Education (NSPIRE), and the BioEarth regional earth system modeling project. The center has hosted workshops and lectures on environmental topics.

The center includes approximately 190 faculty members from seven colleges and all WSU campuses. It is focused on environmental research in areas such as ecology and evolution of infectious diseases, economic development and environmental quality, ecosystem dynamics, water and atmospheric resources, subsurface science, environmental entrepreneurship, education for environmental literacy, and human and natural systems interaction, including global change.
