SPOKANE, Wash. – Recognized for their excellent teaching and dedication to students, Cathy Beadle and Pam Kidder of Glover Middle School and the Spokane MESA Center recently were honored with the 2012 Mona Bailey Teacher Leadership Award.
They are the second and third teachers from Eastern Washington to receive this honor. The award, sponsored by Washington MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement), was presented during a recent reception hosted at McKinstry in Spokane.
Mona Bailey presented Beadle and Kidder with plaques and a stipend of $750 each. Jennifer Boden, director of Global University Programs for Amazon, presented each of them with a complimentary Kindle Fire.
The Mona Bailey Teacher Leadership Award was established in 2004 to recognize teacher leadership in mathematics, engineering or science. Applicants are evaluated on their leadership and dedication to K-12 students who are underrepresented in science and math, including African American, Native American, Latino/a and female students.
The award honors Bailey’s lifetime dedication to education in the state of Washington where she has served in many capacities, including assistant state superintendent of public instruction with Superintendent Frank Brouillett.

The goal of MESA is to provide globally competitive and individually competent students in mathematics, engineering and science with full participation of underrepresented students, including African Americans, Latinos/as, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders and females of all ethnicities.
The Spokane MESA center is one of six in Washington. It was founded in 1989 and serves approximately 600 students in grades 7-12. Spokane MESA is supported by Washington State University and Eastern Washington University to maintain a high level of service to the Spokane Public School District.
