Group for Older Adults with Memory Difficulties and their Families

Researchers in the Department of Psychology at WSU are seeking adults age 50 and older with memory problems (or a diagnosis of Mild Cognitive Impairment) for a study designed to teach memory strategies and improve functional independence. Participants should also have a close family member or friend who is willing to participate.

This group provides participants and their family members or friends with practical memory aids and strategies designed to help with managing day-to-day tasks. The group also provides group education, socialization and problem-solving experiences designed to reduce stress and social isolation, increase social support, and increase understanding of the disorder. We are planning to have groups in Spokane, Tri-Cities, and Pullman.

The research also involves completing questionnaires and cognitive tests. Close family members or friends will also complete questionnaires to see if the intervention benefitted their level of support, coping, health, and quality of life. Over the course of a year, participation will involve approximately 12 hours of your time (standard care group) or 60 hours of your time (intervention group).
