PULLMAN, Wash. – Acclaimed trumpeter John Gronberg will be the featured guest performer on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 2011 Washington State University Jazz Festival.
Gronberg will join the award-winning WSU Jazz Big Band, directed by Greg Yasinitsky, in a free concert, noon-1 p.m. in Bryan Hall. Also featured in the performance will be faculty soloists Brian Ward, piano; Frederick “Dave” Snider, bass; David Jarvis, drums and Yasinitsky, saxophone.
Gronberg, a WSU alum, has performed all over the world, including numerous European tours and many years as a Los Angeles studio musician and performer for top shows in Reno and Tahoe.
“Gronberg is a master. He can truly do it all,” said Yasinitsky.
The program will include:
- “Autumn Bells” by Gronberg
- “(Back Home Again in) Indiana” by James F. Hanely as arranged by Yasinitsky
- “You’ve Changed” by Bill Carey and Carl Fischer as arranged by Mark Taylor
- “Newport,” a classic from the Maynard Ferguson library composed by Slide Hampton
The festival will feature school groups from throughout the Northwest performing 8-11:40 a.m. and 2:20-3:40 p.m. in Kimbrough Concert Hall. Gronberg will present a clinic at 1p.m. in Bryan Hall Theatre, and WSU faculty members will present clinics at 10 a.m., 11a.m. and 2 p.m. at various locations in the Kimbrough Music Building. All of these events are open to the public without charge.
The WSU Jazz Festival is supported by the WSU School of Music, the Jazz Society at WSU and a Student Programming Grant from Campus Involvement.
