PULLMAN – PEMCO Mutual Insurance Co., which built its early reputation as being “by educators, for educators,” has been named Education Advocate for 2011 by the Washington State University College of Education.
Stan McNaughton, chief executive officer of PEMCO, will accept the award at the college’s homecoming weekend Scholarship & Excellence event. The festivities will be 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Palouse Ridge Golf Course and are open to the public.
The company was founded in 1949 by Robert J. Handy, the same Seattle journalism and math teacher who launched School Employees Credit Union of Washington. It pays tribute to that legacy with auto insurance discounts for school employees and support of the educational community, including a recent grant to fund WSU research on achieving K-12 educational excellence.
PEMCO sponsors the state’s Golden Apple Awards (in partnership with KCTS-9), School Administrator of the Year Award, Teacher of the Year Award, Vocational Teacher of the Year Award, as well as many other educator conferences.
At the homecoming event, the College of Education also will honor alumnus Sam Adams (’79) with the 2011 Miller-Manchester Mentor Teacher of the Year Award. Adams teaches mathematics at Clarkston High School and frequently guides Washington State student teachers through their practicum experiences.
Also in connection with homecoming, the College of Education will showcase faculty and student scholarly activity on Friday, Oct. 14, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Education Addition building.
