PULLMAN – What are today’s freshmen thinking about renewable resources, global warming, popular culture and sustainability?
Selena Castro extends an invitation to all on campus to find out by attending the fall 2010 Freshman Academic Showcase 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30, in the Smith CUE atrium.
Thirty-seven posters will represent the work of about 120 first-semester students in eight sections of UColl 104: Pathways to Academic Success Seminar (PASS). The freshmen, who are mainly considering majors in STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering and math) or business, have worked throughout fall semester on scholarly research.
“Through their research projects and papers, these freshmen have sharpened their skills in critical thinking, analytical reasoning and self in society. They have increased their information literacy skills and have become more adept with oral and written communications,” said Castro, director of student success and transition programs, part of the University College.
UColl 104 was taught this semester by Castro and seven doctoral students from the College of Education: Mapuana Antonio, Lisa Bruna, Ian Chittle, Gary Grogan, Terese King, Stephanie Langston and Diem Phan. King is studying in higher education administration; the rest are in counseling psychology.
“Our students welcome the opportunity to share with you what they have learned this semester on valuable topics that impact them, their community and world around them, and we hope to see you at the poster event today,” Castro said.
