SPOKANE – Two WSU employees and one board member were among six women honored for service and leadership recently during the annual YWCA Women of Achievement benefit luncheon.

The WSU honorees, selected from nominations submitted by community members in six categories, were:
•Health care/science: Margaret Bruya, professor, WSU College of Nursing.
•Volunteer community service: Barb Chamberlain, director of communications and public affairs, WSU Spokane, and founder of Bike to Work Spokane.
•Carl Maxey racial justice award: Yvonne Lopez-Morton, member of the WSU Spokane campus advisory board and associate editor of The Fig Tree.

Other categories included arts and culture, professional, and young woman of achievement.

“The YWCA Women of Achievement benefit luncheon is our opportunity to honor outstanding individuals whose lives, talents and passions shape the community,” said Trish McFarland, YWCA of Spokane executive director. “The luncheon also serves as a vital source of funding for the programs and services we provide to struggling women and children in the Spokane area.”

The luncheon featured keynote speaker Susan Stamberg of National Public Radio, a familiar voice as host of the “Morning Edition” and “All Things Considered” programs.
