Phishing scam targets WSU students

WSU Information Technology has received reports of a phishing scam targeting WSU students.

Students are being contacted by a phone auto-dialer indicating the call is from Student Counseling Services, the Registrar’s office, Admissions or other official university offices. The calls originate from a 1-888 number and instruct the student to respond by pressing “1.” After doing so, the student is told by the auto-dialer that “You have been disenrolled from your courses.”

This is a scam designed to gather personal information or money.

Please take these steps if you receive a call like this:

• Do not respond to the call. Make note of the caller’s phone number and hang up.

• Call the WSU Police at their non-emergency number, 509-332-2521, to report the call. Be prepared to provide the caller’s number if you have it.

• Safeguard personal information and never give personal details over the phone.
