WSU Information Technology has received reports of a phishing scam targeting WSU students.
Students are being contacted by a phone auto-dialer indicating the call is from Student Counseling Services, the Registrar’s office, Admissions or other official university offices. The calls originate from a 1-888 number and instruct the student to respond by pressing “1.” After doing so, the student is told by the auto-dialer that “You have been disenrolled from your courses.”
This is a scam designed to gather personal information or money.
Please take these steps if you receive a call like this:
Do not respond to the call. Make note of the caller’s phone number and hang up.
Call the WSU Police at their non-emergency number, 509-332-2521, to report the call. Be prepared to provide the caller’s number if you have it.
Safeguard personal information and never give personal details over the phone.
This warning also is posted on the WSU Alert website, http://alert.wsu.edu.
