SPOKANE – In an effort to rev up recycling efforts on the Riverpoint Campus, Facilities Operations and the Associated Students of WSU Spokane teamed up with a class of Interdisciplinary Design Institute students to create an educational recycling poster.
The challenge was to encourage the campus community to recycle more and to do it properly. The goal of the poster was to identify the types of recyclables and illustrate how to process each at recycling stations.
Vivian Knapp and Jon Schad of Facilities Operations and ASWSU Spokane officers Jessica Moore and Kayla Simons enlisted the help of instructor/doctor of design student Mehran Madani and his class to create a poster.
The design students held a contest, with each student presenting work to a panel of judges. Judges included Schad, Moore, Simons and Madani, along with doctor of design students Amber Joplin and Brian Orthel.
“This was a very talented group of students, and each design was impressive,” said Schad. “We appreciate the efforts displayed by these students to make our campus a great place to learn and work.”
While the choice was difficult, the winning design – “Don’t be trashy…save the planet!” by Allie Leaf – stood out through its use of a witty, attention-grabbing comic strip. Her poster will be placed above each recycling station on campus, and Leaf will receive a portable drive for storing her future design work, compliments of ASWSU Spokane.
“We have excellent talent on campus, and the students displayed outstanding work,” said Moore.
