RICHLAND, Wash. About 160 middle and high school students from the Pasco, Sunnyside, Granger and Wapato school districts will showcase team design, problem solving, mathematical know-how and communication skills in a Windmill Challenge at MESA Day.
The Math, Engineering and Science Achievement program (MESA) of Yakima Valley/Tri-Cities is holding its annual MESA Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, April 22, at Washington State University Tri-Cities, in the Consolidated Information Center, 2770 University Drive, Richland.
MESA Day is a day of learning, discovery, competitions, activities and fun events that encourage camaraderie and spark interest in math, engineering and science. In the Windmill Challenge, the teams will research, design, build, test and compete with a windmill device based on its mechanical power, wind to vehicle transfer, electrical power and wind direction response.
The event is in the MESA provides enriching educational opportunities that help build a pathway to college and careers in the science, technology, engineering and math fields for students who are currently underrepresented in those fields: African-American, Latino, Native American, and female. The Yakima Valley/Tri-Cities division of MESA is housed at WSU Tri-Cities.
