PULLMAN – WSU School of Music will present the final choral concert of the year at 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 22 in Bryan Hall Theatre. Included in this performance will be the Madrigal/Chamber Singers, University Singers and Concert Choir.
Directed by choral conducting graduate student Mark Reagan, University Singers will perform Palestrina’s motet “Sicut Cervus.” Following this the group will offer Daniel Pinkham’s short but winsome modern-day madrigal, “Piping Anne and Husky Paul.” The performance will also include an a cappella arrangement of “Poor Wayfaring Stranger” featuring solos by Laura Lorber and Dani Van Slyke, and will conclude with the gospel song “He Never Failed Me Yet” with soloists Jennifer Kurz and Jason Balera.
Concert Choir, conducted by Lori Wiest, will begin with a set of Sara Teasdale poems set to music by contemporary American composer Kirke Mechem called “The Winds of May.” Taken from the “Nocturnes” by Morten Lauridsen, the Concert Choir will share two selections: “Soneto de la Noche” (Sonnet of the Night) set to a poem by Pablo Neruda, and “Sure On This Shining Night” set to James Agee’s famous poem. Concluding the program will be “Let Me Fly,” a spiritual arranged by Robert De Cormier highlighting soloists from with the choir. Pianist for Concert Choir is Darnell Epps, graduate student majoring in piano.
The concert is free and open to the public.
