At the national Interior Design Educators Council’s conference, John Turpin, associate professor of interior design, was named a fellow for significant and sustained contributions to interior design education. He also earned the Presidential Award for his years of service to IDEC, including his position as the 2008-2009 president.

Two of the 10 finalists for best presentation at the conference included faculty from WSU: Janetta McCoy, associate professor of interior design and co-author with Darrin Brooks of Utah State, for “Political Decorating: Leadership Styles from President Franklin D. Roosevelt to Barack Obama Compared to their Oval Offices;” and Turpin, Kerry Brooks, associate professor in the Interdisciplinary Design Institure, and Rena Klein, instructor in IDI, for “Empowering Students: The Application of Experiential
Learning Theory, Open Space Techniques, and ‘Student Voice’ to a Vertical, Multidisciplinary Charette.”

Turpin also was awarded the Fairchild Topical Issues Grant to support the IDI’s sixth annual Design Research Focus Week entitled “Designing Health” (October 2010).
