WSU seniors Kiersten Dallstream and Carly Dobratz were selected in the 2010 Women’s Professional Soccer Draft last week.
WSU, UCLA and Stanford were the only Pacific-10 Conference schools to have multiple players selected in this season’s draft.
“We had a lot of success as a team over the last two seasons and this is another way for people to notice that we are on the map as a program,” Dobratz said. “Our team is the reason I am where I am. I wouldn’t have been recognized without my teammates. They are a big part of this day.”
“I couldn’t be happier for Kiersten and Carly,” Cougar Head Coach Matt Potter said. “Both have the qualities to shine at the next level and to have others recognize their talent is fantastic.
“To have two great players drafted speaks volumes to the environment we continue to provide in Pullman,” he said. “This is another indication that we are truly recruiting, developing and succeeding as a staff, team and program.”
Dallstream, a forward from Fountain Hills, Ariz., went to the Los Angeles Sol in the first round as the ninth pick overall. A midfielder from Gilbert, Ariz., Dobratz was the Washington Freedom’s second round choice (18th overall).
“I have always wanted to play professional soccer and this is something Carly and I have talked about so much for a long time,” Dallstream said. “It would have been great to be on the same team, but it is definitely a dream come true.”
Dallstream led the Cougars with 13 goals and 33 points in 2009. Her seven assists tied for the team lead. Her point total is third best on the WSU single-season list and her goals and assists are each tied for fourth-best.
In her career, Dallstream scored 30 goals and recorded 76 points. Both marks are third all-time at WSU. Her 16 assists are tied for third best with Dobratz on the Cougar career list.
Dobratz registered five goals and four assists for 14 points in 2009. One of her assists came during the first round of the NCAA Championship when the Cougars defeated Villanova 1-0. She ranks on the WSU career lists in goals (seventh, 17), assists (tied-third, 16) and points (sixth, 50).
In 2009, the first season for the WPS, Los Angeles won the league’s regular season title and was runner-up for the championship. Washington led the league in goals and qualified for the playoffs. The 2010 season begins in April.
