WSU jazz ensembles

PULLMAN —The  award winning WSU jazz ensembles  will perform at 8 p.m. Tuesday, October 7 in Kimbrough Concert Hall.
The concert will feature the VOJAZZ vocal jazz ensemble under the direction of Kathleen Hollingsworth and the WSU Jazz Big Band under the direction of Greg Yasinitsky.

Hollingsworth joined the WSU faculty this fall. She came from San Francisco where she taught at San Francisco State University and the San Francisco School of the Arts. Under her direction, VOJAZZ will perform Frank Foster’s classic “Shiny Stockings” as arranged by Mike Annicharico, Pat Metheny’s “James” as arranged my Michele Wier and a funky version of Horace Silver’s “Señor Blues” as arranged by Tim Bulkholz. Soloists will include vocalists Terry Cerrillo and Jordyn Palmer.

The Jazz Big Band under the direction of Yasinitsky will perform the Thad Jones classic “Mean What You Say,” Mike Steinel’s “Just a Minor Thing,” Dave Hanson’s “Across the Heart” and Ray Noble’s bebop favorite “Cherokee” as arranged by Frank Mantooth. The ensemble will also perform Yasinitsky’s “New Rhumboogie,” dedicated to his brother, Raleigh, and Thelonious Monk’s beautiful ballad “Ask Me Now” as arranged by Yasinitsky. Soloists will include trumpeter Brendan McMurphy, trombonist Drake da Ponte, pianist Charles Wicklander, guitarist Roger Johnson, bassist Matt Grimes and saxophonists Patrick Sheng, Oliver Walter, David Crow, Gabe DeMiero and Matt Lanka.
