Striving to do more

Going above and beyond his job description is what Luke Fidge is all about.
Fidge, a senior media tech at the WSU Learning Center in Walla Walla, was the October — and the first — recipient of the Crimson Spirit Award. The award was developed by the WSU Employee Recognition Program to honor employees who exemplify university values through superior service, creative problem solving and outstanding contributions to the WSU community.
“Over the last few months Luke has been called on to work harder,” said Cynthia Selde, learning center coordinator and Fidge’s nominator.
“He has always been very professional about his work and he has always been willing to go above and beyond what his job description calls for. He is just a great guy to work with.”
Since the learning center is located on the Walla Walla Community College campus, Fidge works with both WSU and WWCC. For the WSU program, he ensures the optimum reception and transmission of WSU classes and meetings via the AMS and WECN systems.
With the community college, he works with faculty, staff and technicians. “It is a great partnership,” he said.
Recently, Fidge helped develop the technology for the new health science building and the environmental center at the community college, Selde said.
Fidge researched specifications, contacted vendors, drew wiring diagrams, ordered equipment and worked throughout the summer on installing the technology for both WSU and WWCC videoconferencing classrooms.
Selde nominated Fidge because of his performance in doing far more that what is required, such as taking on tasks like the building’s technology setup.
Fidge was surprised to receive the award, but also very honored, he said.
“I was really pleased by the recognition of the work I had done, but it’s not just my work,” he said. “We’re really one close-knit team here, and I think we work together well because our ultimate goal is to ensure the best possible learning environment for both WSU and WWCC students.”
