Governor proposes sweeping redesign of state education

Gov. Christine Gregoire on Monday, Nov. 13, announced a plan authored by the Washington Learns committee to dramatically redesign and reorganize the state’s education system — including K-12 and higher education.

Gregoire, who chaired the Washington Learns committee over the past 18 months, described this as a “bold plan to redesign and re-invest in education during the next decade,” a plan that would “provide high-quality lifelong learning for all our citizens in the 21st Century.” The emphasis she noted is toward a seamless, lifelong learning system.

The biggest immediate challenge to accomplishing the proposed change she noted is finding $1 billion in necessary funding.
