WSU Student Publications Win National Awards at Media Convention

PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University journalism students and student publications won awards in Web design, First Amendment issues, photography, newspaper excellence and marketing at the 2001 National College Media Convention.

The Daily Evergreen was ranked the fourth best daily tabloid college paper in the country at the convention. It was also honored in the best of show contest for its coverage of the U.S. retaliation against terrorism and a featured homecoming football game photo from the Oct. 8 edition.

The Daily Evergreen homepage at is first in the nation for its home page. The page was designed by Toby Beal, a WSU graduate student in advertising.

The Robert D.G. Lewis First Amendment Award was given to Candace Baltz of Tracyton, editor of the Evergreen in fall 2000, by the Society of Professional Journalists. She was selected for urging the WSU Council on Climate and Safety to conduct its meetings in public. This honor is bestowed upon one college journalist in the nation for defending the First Amendment.

The Daily Evergreen’s photographer and photo coach, Kevin German of Port Angeles, won first place in feature photography in the Society of Professional Journalists’ 2000 national contest. The award-winning picture features a lone rock climber at Smith Rock in Oregon. German took this picture when he interned at The (Eugene) Register-Guard.

The Chinook was recognized with the Best Yearbook Marketing in the Country award for the 2001 edition’s campaign. Ann Casey of Redmond and Mandee Merrill of Boise, Idaho, both 2001 graduates, led the campaign that included the use of fliers, campus signage, advertising and drawings to promote the publication.

The awards are reviewed and determined by college media advisers, then presented at the annual convention. Students and publications are nominated from across the nation.

“It demonstrates in my humble opinion, the high caliber of students, publications and journalism education at Washington State University’s School of Communication and Student Publications,” said Dave Cuillier, editorial adviser, WSU Student Publications.
