WSU Publications and Printing Wins Prestigious Management Award

PULLMAN, Wash. — The Washington State University Office of University Publications and Printing/WSU Press has received the International Publishing Management Association’s Management Award for 2000.

“This award recognizes the talent and contributions of each member of the staff, who on a daily basis help support the role and mission of Washington State University,” said Sally Savage, vice president for university advancement.

The IPMA award recognizes an outstanding in-house publishing department for its team effort in management excellence and support services to the parent organization. Established in 1985, the award honors an entire in-house publishing operation that excels in efficient management practices that further the parent institution’s objectives.

Judging criteria include productivity, new technology, equipment inventory and acquisition, promotional initiatives, budget, employee relations, customer service and safety. Only one in-house publisher is given the national award each year.

OUPP also received three national awards for excellence in printing of individual projects. The “Heavy Hitters” CASE conference brochure won first place in the one- or multicolor booklets category. Taking second place in the posters category was the WSU athletics baseball schedule poster. The WSU Foundation annual meeting packet, “What You Seed Is What You Get,” was awarded an honorable mention in the special projects (four-color process or more) category. OUPP was one of 45 companies and universities nationwide receiving the printing excellence awards.

“Each member of the Publications and Printing team takes personal ownership in the projects they touch,” said Steven Rigby, director of printing. “These awards symbolize the outstanding dedication of an entire team.” Rigby received the award on behalf of the staff at the IPMA international meeting held in Portland, Ore., in June.

IPMA is the leading association exclusively dedicated to the in-house professionals who provide graphic design, page layout, copy, print, mail and distribution services to their enterprise.
