PULLMAN, Wash. — The Washington State University Madrigal Singers will present its annual Spring Madrigal Concert April 3 in Bryan Hall Auditorium.
The 8 p.m. free, public concert, conducted by Lori J. Wiest, will feature secular 16th-century madrigals by well-known composers of the period, including William Byrd, Thomas Weelkes, Thomas Tomkins, John Wilbye and John Farmer, all from England; Ludwig Senfl from Germany; and Pierre Passereau and Pierre Certon from France. Also on the program will be compositions by contemporary American composers: Robert H. Young’s “Two Campion Poems” and Morten Lauridsen’s “Ubi caritas” and “O Magnum Mysterium.”
The Madrigal Singers, one of six vocal ensembles in the School of Music and Theatre Arts, consists of 23 singers who perform in Renaissance-era costumes. The group’s specialty is singing a cappella sacred and secular music from the Renaissance, but its small size enables members to perform vocal chamber music from all centuries.
