WSU VIBES Conference Reset to April 28-30

PULLMAN, Wash. — April 28-30 are the new dates for the Washington State
University VIBES Conference for African American high school and college

Originally scheduled for March 3-4, Visionaries Inspiring Black Empowered
Students was postponed last week due to timing and budget, according to J.J.
Oliver, VIBES chair.

Oliver and another staff member served as conference co-chairs. In December,
the co-chair left WSU for a job at another university. This complication helped
put planning behind schedule, Oliver said.

WSU, the Black Women’s Caucus, and the university’s chapter of Phi Beta
Sigma Fraternity, Inc. sponsor the annual event, which features separate
programs for women and men. This year’s conference theme is “From
Followers to Leaders: Preparing for the Challenges of Tomorrow.”

Oliver said for the next few months, WSU student recruiters will be talking to
high school students and counselors throughout the state about the
conference. “VIBES is an excellent program. Attending VIBES also provides an
opportunity to visit the WSU campus,” he said.

Students registered for the conference will “continue in the system and are
automatically registered for the new dates. If they are unable to attend, they
may cancel in writing by March 31 and receive a full refund,” said Gail Rowland
of WSU’s Conferences and Professional Programs.

While the conference schedule remains similar to that set for March, housing
for conference participants, including students and chaperones, will no longer
be in WSU residence halls. Fees paid earlier for residence halls will be
refunded. Rooms for April are available at Pullman’s Holiday Inn Express at a
special VIBES Conference rate. Participants should call the inn at 509/334-4437
to make reservations.
