WSU a ‘Hidden Treasure,’ National Guidance Counselors Say

PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University is both a “hidden treasure” and an
excellent value, according to a first-ever national survey of high school guidance counselors.
The results of the 1999 survey, conducted by Kaplan Educational Centers, were published
this month by Simon & Schuster in the Kaplan Newsweek College Catalog 2000.
According to the new catalog, WSU is among the “best (colleges which) aren’t necessarily
the most renowned. Guidance counselors recommend these “hidden treasures” — terrific colleges
that aren’t as well known as they should be.”
Other major universities called “hidden treasures” include Ohio State University, the
University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, the University of Oregon and the University of
Other categories in which WSU was singled out as among the best in the country include:
— The best value for your money. “You don’t have to go deep into debt to pay for a
top-notch college education,” the catalog says. WSU is among colleges “guidance counselors
believe offer the best value for … the tuition dollar.”
— A good liberal arts education. According to the catalog, “Preprofessional programs are
popular, but the liberal arts continue to hold their own in colleges across the country.” WSU was
among those colleges guidance counselors recommend to those “seeking a good liberal arts
— Colleges for students with learning disabilities. “There is much more awareness today of
the need to diagnose and work with students who have learning disabilities,” the catalog says.
Guidance counselors selected WSU and other colleges for their “superior programs and
services” offered learning disabled students.
— Best range of extracurricular activities. “Your college experience should include more than
just studying,” says the catalog. The colleges selected have been “recommended by guidance
counselors for their wide range of extracurricular activities,” including college newspaper, college
radio station, marching band, and the range of clubs and associations.
— Top athletic programs. “College can be a great place for perfecting your skills in a
particular sport, or for trying sports you’ve never played before,” says the catalog. WSU is
among colleges which offer “superior athletic programs,” according to guidance counselors.
In the catalog, guidance counselors say WSU’s “high academic standards and strong
disability service office impress guidance counselors. Recommended programs include
pre-medicine, pre-veterinary medicine, engineering, architecture, hotel and restaurant
administration, and athletics.
