WSU’s Allen I. White Lecture Set for April 6

PULLMAN, Wash. — Jerry B. Hook, a 1960 Washington State University College of
Pharmacy graduate, will present the 1999 Allen I. White Lectureship next week on the WSU
Hook’s April 6 lecture is planned for 3:10 p.m. in Todd Hall, Room 130, and is open to the
public without charge.
The lecture will cover the use of biotechnology in the search for new treatments of stroke
and other reperfusion injuries.
Hook was a member of the pharmacology and toxicology faculty at Michigan State
University for 17 years. Since 1983, he has worked in private industry research and development.
Hook founded Lexin Pharmaceutical Corp. in 1993 and later merged it into Sparta
Pharmaceuticals, which acquires technologies and drugs for the treatment of many life
threatening diseases, including cancer and cardiovascular disorders.
In addition to his efforts with Sparta Pharmaceuticals, Hook has chaired the Peer Review
Committee on the National Toxicology Program and served as president of the Society of
The lectureship was named for WSU’s pharmacy college dean from 1960-79. The 39-year
WSU faculty member served as president of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy
and on numerous national, state and local boards, commissions, councils and committees.
