It is hard to believe that it has been 50 years since Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his inspired “I Have a Dream” speech to more than 20,000 civil rights supporters on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, said WSU President Elson S. Floyd, In his latest Perspectives column.
I remember, as a 6-year-old boy, listening with my family to Dr. King’s remarks on that hot August day in 1963, and knowing that something very important was happening. The power and poise of his remarks captured the essence of a movement that changed the course of history for our nation and world. His words offered hope and possibility to a community struggling to access all of the benefits of being American.
