PULLMAN, Wash. – The social, political and cultural challenges to making public policy reflect scientific knowledge will be discussed 2:45-3:45 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, in the Bundy Reading Room in Avery Hall by Brian Baird, former U.S. representative for Washington’s third congressional district.

Baird will explore how the social sciences help us better understand the practical uses of scientific research in policymaking.
Baird received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology and is former chairman of the Department of Psychology at Pacific Lutheran University. While in Congress, he served on the Committee on Science and Technology and was chairman of the Subcommittee on Energy and Environment.
