Where Do You Take a Grizzly Bear That Needs An MRI?

PULLMAN, Wash.— A 500 pound grizzly bear lay inside an MRI machine at the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine today. The giant animal named Revel (sounds like Rebel) was at WSU because it had developed increasing impairment of its ability to move, indicating there was likely something wrong with its central nervous system.

Revel is from the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center in West Yellowstone, Montana.

The MRI revealed an area in the bear’s spinal cord is compressed, either from swelling, a narrowing spinal canal due to bony overgrowth, spinal disc disease, or perhaps a combination of these problems.  Possible treatments are being discussed and will depend in large part on the owner’s wishes and the bear’s somewhat advanced age of 15 years.

The Discovery Center brought another bear, Stoke, to WSU earlier this year for an MRI.
