PULLMAN WSU announced Monday that it is not accepting any more applications for incoming freshmen at its Pullman campus this fall.
The Tri-Cities and Vancouver campuses of WSU are continuing to accept freshman applications. WSU Spokane does not enroll freshmen.
“Unfortunately, there are a number of strong freshman applicants who have not yet been accepted at the Pullman campus because of enrollment limitations,” said Wendy Jo Peterson, WSU admissions director.
Peterson said WSU is establishing a wait list for students the university would like to admit, but for whom space is not available at this time. Students who are being placed on the wait list are being notified via e-mail beginning this week.
“If they are on the wait list, it carries no obligation on their part, but it does create an opportunity for them to be admitted should additional openings arise between now and the beginning of the fall semester,” Peterson said.
The university – which saw a first-time freshman fall semester enrollment in 2009 that was second only to the record 3,411 first-time freshmen who began in fall 2008 – has received more than 11,500 applications from first-time freshmen seeking admission for fall 2010. Admissions officials estimate the university will be able to accommodate a freshman class in Pullman this fall of about 3,200, compared to 3,372 the university enrolled in fall 2009.
“We are trying to strike the proper balance between accommodating the growing demand for a WSU education and protecting the quality of the educational experience those students will receive at a time of limited resources,” Peterson said.
