SPOKANE – Approved early this week by the Washington legislature, the state budget makes expected cuts to the overall WSU operating budget, but holds a bright spot for Spokane: additional design funding for the Biomedical/Health Sciences Phase One Building.
The budget adds $3.5 million to the $4.3 million pre-design/design funding appropriated in 2009 to make the building larger by 46,000 gross square feet.
The capital construction budget also included $15 million in financing to replace the WSU student information system, which will benefit university functions such as admissions, registration, financial aid and tuition collections systemwide.
In commenting on the budget, WSU President Elson S. Floyd said, “
the investment in expanded medical education facilities in Spokane and the legislative support for funding for our core computing systems are absolutely critical in achieving our institutional priorities.”
NBBJ Architects was selected in 2009 to design the building as the first phase of a multi-phase research complex to be sited east of the Nursing Building on Spokane Falls Boulevard. This 2010 budget expands the building to an estimated $78 million facility.
