PULLMAN – The WSU Wind Symphony will present “From Deutschland with Love” at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, in Bryan theater.
The event features an evening of band music celebrating contributions of romantic German composers to the repertoire of the wind band and to musical life in America. Under the baton of Timothy Robblee, the Wind Symphony will perform music by Weill, Strauss, Bruckner, Bernstein and Hindemith.
The secondary theme connecting these pieces is the impact that the composers’ Jewish roots or connections had on their musical and personal lives.
The program opens and closes with the music of two composers, Kurt Weill and Paul Hindemith, who immigrated to the U.S. to escape Nazi Germany and the dangers of their Jewish family ties. After presenting Weill’s arrangement of music from his own “Threepenny Opera,” the concert will explore two works for winds of Richard Strauss, explore Bernstein’s musical exploration of his own Jewish faith in “Profanation” from the Jeremiah Symphony and culminate in Hindemith’s seminal Symphony in Bb, composed in 1951 for the U.S. Army Band.
