PULLMAN – The Piano Pedagogy Lab School (PPLS) at WSU and the Pullman Music Teachers Association are hosting a weekend of events April 23-24 celebrating composition and creativity featuring Valerie Roth Roubos.
On Friday, April 23, Roubos – a composer of educational piano music, as well as a music teacher, lecturer, adjudicator and performer – will visit Lincoln Middle School and Jefferson Elementary School in Pullman to give interactive clinics on composition.
Her compositions for piano will be played by local musicians during a Friday concert at 6:30 p.m. in Kimbrough Concert Hall.
On April 24, Roubos will sign autographs and answer questions at an open forum at 9 a.m. and teach students in a master class of her compositions at 10:30 a.m. in Kimbrough Concert Hall. She will also share insights at a recital of her works performed by community students enrolled in the PPLS and give a clinic entitled “Teaching Today’s (Too) Busy Student” at 2 p.m. in Kimbrough, Room 101.
Roubos has lectured at the Washington State Music Teachers Conference. She has presented workshops at Holy Names Music Camp, Spokane Music Teachers Association, Tri-Cities Music Teachers Association, Lake Washington Music Teachers Association and the Clark County Music Teachers Association. She serves as the chair of the WSMTA Composer Commissioning Committee and has played an active role in the Spokane Music Teachers Association.
In 2001, the South Dakota Music Teachers Association selected Roubos as Composer of the Year. She was chosen to be the 2004-2005 composer-in-residence at WSU. In 2006, she was named Composer of the Year by the Washington State Music Teachers Association and the Wyoming Music Teachers Association selected her as the Composer of the Year for 2007.
All Friday events are free. Cost for Saturday events is $15 for general public, $10 for the Washington State Music Teacher Association members and free to students with ID.
