Sterk takes San Diego AD job; McCoy named interim

McCoy has served at WSU since 2001 and was promoted from associate director to senior associate director of athletics in 2004. Her appointment to senior woman administrator came in the summer of 2007.
 
In her capacity as senior associate director of athletics, she is charged with overseeing all aspects of WSU’s athletic budget and supervises several areas with the department including the business office, equipment, computer and football operations, and event management and facility operations. She also serves as a liaison for men’s and women’s basketball.

McCoy serves on several Pacific-10 Conference committees, including the Senior Woman Administrator and Television Committees and on the Budget and Finance, Compliance and Enforcement, Diversity Leadership Initiative Review, Awards Review, Medical Care, and Student-Athlete Advisory committees. She also been appointed to the NCAA Women’s Rowing Committee and is a past vice president of the Pac-10 Conference.

A Wisconsin native, McCoy earned a bachelor’s degree in sports management in 1989 from the University of Massachusetts. While an undergraduate, she worked for the Pittsburgh Penguins professional hockey organization, expanding the club’s season ticket base. McCoy also served an internship as the assistant athletic business manager at the University of Connecticut, and was instrumental in designing and implementing a comprehensive computerized budget-tracking system.

McCoy served in several capacities at the University of Maine from 1989-1995, lastly as associate director of athletics and senior woman administrator. At Maine, she supervised men’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s swimming and softball in addition to the athletic business office, ticket office, retail store and cheerleading staff and operations. She took a similar administrative positive at St. Louis University from 1995-96. In 1996, McCoy moved west, joining the staff at Portland State University as associate director of athletics and senior woman administrator, and was promoted to senior associate director of athletics in 1998. At PSU, she managed all internal staff and the daily operations of the department, representing the director of athletics as needed. McCoy also supervised men’s and women’s golf, cross country/track and field, and women’s volleyball, soccer, tennis and softball.

McCoy and her husband Brian have two children, daughter Taylor and son Jake.

PULLMAN – San Diego State University has scheduled press conference for 2 p.m. today and is expected to announce Jim Sterk, WSU’s current athletic director, as its new AD.

 
In anticipation of SDSU announcement, WSU President Elson S. Floyd issued the following statement:  “We appreciate the contributions that Jim Sterk has made to WSU during his tenure as athletic director. Jim has done great things at WSU, and our athletic programs are stronger because of his leadership. He has positioned WSU Athletics in such a way as to continue a high level of competitiveness and excellence within the Pac-10 and across the nation. Jim has done an outstanding job for our university, and we wish him all the best in his new position.
 
“Early this week, I will meet with the Athletic Department staff to update them on our direction going forward. I have asked Anne McCoy, senior associate athletic director/senior woman administrator, to act as interim athletic director, and she has accepted my request to serve in this capacity.
 
“On Wednesday, Feb. 17, I will announce the composition of a search advisory committee to assist in the search for our next athletic director. I expect to identify a successful candidate within the next month.
 
“Under Jim’s leadership, our competitiveness within the Pac-10 Conference and the graduation rates and academic performance of our student-athletes have been greatly enhanced. He has raised the performance of WSU Athletics during his decade of service, and the future of Cougar Athletics is bright indeed. Our objective is to continue to advance the academic and athletic performances of our student-athletes under the next athletic director.”
 
Sterk at WSU
Sterk, a Washington native, was appointed as the Cougars’ 10th athletic director in June 2000, making him the third longest serving AD.
  • Over the past three years, 13 WSU teams have competed in NCAA post-season tournaments.
  • Academically, the exhausted eligibility rate for WSU student athletes is 92 percent over the past 10 years – ranking WSU second in the PAC-10 to Stanford.
  • WSU Athletic Foundation membership has doubled since 2000 and annual gifts have increased from just under $3 million in 2000 to more than $13 million in 2008.
He came to WSU from Portland State University where he was athletic director from 1995-2000. He held assistant and associate athletic director positions at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; the University of Maine; Seattle Pacific University, and Tulane University.
 
He received his bachelor’s degree in physical education and business education at Western Washington  University where he earned four varsity letters in football and one in basketball. He earned a master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University.
