RICHLAND – WSU education faculty have awarded the 2010 Excellence in Educational Leadership Award to Richland School District Superintendent and alumna Jean M. Lane for her efforts to prepare new principals.
Candidates are chosen based on exemplary community contributions in leadership-related areas; they do not have to be members of the WSU community.
Lane was selected by a unanimous vote of the 10 educational leadership faculty members at WSU’s College of Education, who teach on all four WSU campuses. The award is among 31 bestowed nationally this year by the University Council for Educational Administration based on the recommendation of faculty at its member universities.
Lane is involved in mentoring school district employees who are interns in WSU’s Principal Preparation Program, said Associate Professor Michele Acker-Hocevar of WSU Tri-Cities. It is rare, she said, for a superintendent to be so committed to ensure future principals are getting the best experience possible.
“We cannot thank Dr. Lane enough for her leadership in promoting excellence through data-based decision making, professional learning communities, and individual and school development and improvement,” said Acker-Hocevar.
Lane said she makes the effort because school principals are the key to a quality school system.
“My priority is the development of outstanding leaders who are prepared to improve student learning,” she said.
Lane holds a doctor of education degree from WSU, where she also earned her superintendent certificate.
