Policy expert, filmmaker to highlight globalization conference

PULLMAN, Wash. – A policy expert who fights for justice in education and an internationally lauded filmmaker will highlight the ninth annual International Globalization, Diversity and Education Conference Feb. 20-22 at the Heathman Lodge in Vancouver. It is sponsored by the Washington State University College of Education. 
 
David Stovall will deliver the keynote address, “Globalizing the Local: Justice as Interrupting the Grip of Neoliberal Urbanism in Education.” He is an associate professor of educational policy studies and African-American studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago.  He works with community organizations and schools to address issues of social justice.
 
Canadian filmmaker Velcrow Ripper will give a private screening of his latest film, “Occupy Love.”  Ripper is best known for his Genie Award-winning 2006 film “Scared Sacred” and the documentary “Fierce Light: When Spirit Meets Action.”

 

Conference participants come from fields as diverse as nursing, political science, communication and women’s studies, among others. Researchers, educators, students, teachers, activists and community members are welcome to participate.

 

This year’s theme is “Visualizing global problems and possibilities: Imagining pedagogies of transformation.”
