Fast and precise demand shaping is a key ingredient for the electrical power grid of the future. Current DR programs, however, suffer from a series of market, regulatory, infrastructure and technology problems, such as lack of scalability, privacy, precision and customer acceptance. We have developed ColorPower, a fundamentally different DR approach based on distributed computing and stochastic control. ColorPower takes advantage of inexpensive communications technology, making it feasible for nearly every major electrical device at home to be in near real-time communication with and respond autonomously to power grid state signals. This approach de-commoditizes power demand into different service priority tiers. The proposed methodology solves many of the existing problems and has the potential to elevate DR resources into a potent capability that can improve the efficiency of the energy markets.
