RICHLAND, Wash. Insights and opinions about “Arab Democracy Uprisings and New Challenges in the Middle East” is slated for 7 p.m. Monday, October 29, at Washington State University Tri-Cities.
The panel discussion will shed light on the broader dynamics confronting the Middle East two years after Arab democracy uprisings transformed the region. The speakers will address different aspects of the new regional order, from the success of Islamic parties in Tunisia and Egypt to the ongoing civil war in Syria. There will be an emphasis on the struggles of Egypt with the transition to democracy and the resilient hope of the Egyptian people.
The Arab Democracy event is in the East Building Auditorium, 2710 Crimson Way, Richland. Admission is free and open to the public.

Steve Niva, professor of International Politics and Middle East Studies at The Evergreen State College focusing on “U.S. Foreign Policy and the Challenge of Arab Democracy.”

Larry Pintak, founding Dean of The Edward R. Murrow College of Communication at WSU. A former CBS News Middle East correspondent, he has been called the foremost chronicler of the interaction between the Arab and Western media. Pintak will specifically discuss “The YouTube Effect: How Anger and Agitprop Shape America’s Relationship With Islam.”

Hassan Ziada, a mechanical engineer at Hanford and an adjunct faculty member at WSU Tri-Cities. Ziada was born in Alexandria, Egypt, and serves as the Imam at the Islamic Center of Tri-Cities. He will talk about “New Challenges for the Transition to Democracy in Egypt.”
The Arab Democracy panel discussion is sponsored by the Humanities Club student organization at WSU Tri-Cities in partnership with the College of Arts and Sciences 2012-2013 Series of Events.
