PULLMAN, Wash. – Submissions for the Wine-By-Cougars Artist Expression Spring 2013 Art Contest are being accepted by the Washington State University Alumni Association (WSUAA).

Artists compete for a chance to see their artwork adorning the 2013 Artist Expression wine release label. The winner also receives a $500 scholarship for spring 2013 semester from Wine-By-Cougars and the WSUAA. The contest is open to all 2013 WSU graduates (spring, summer or fall).

Maryhill Cabernet Sauvignon selected
The wine to be featured in the spring 2013 release is the 2009 Classic Cabernet from the 2009 Washington Winery of the Year, Maryhill Winery, in Goldendale, Wash. The Maryhill Winery was founded in 2001 by WSU alumni Craig and Vicki Leuthold. This wine is an optional release for Wine-By-Cougars wine club members, alumni and friends.

Maryhill, one of the first 100 wineries in the state, produces 19 varietals wines and has won 27 awards. The winery welcomes more than 75,000 visitors per year, has a 900+ member wine club and the wine is distributed nationwide.

The Leutholds said they submitted their 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon for the event because it is their favorite wine. It recently received a 90-point rating from Wine Enthusiast Magazine.

Maryhill describes the wine as featuring: “bold flavors of Pacific Northwest fruit and fresh honey notes, tart cherry, anise, fig and violets. On the palate, the full body carries a myriad of flavors including raspberry, vanilla, cherry, bittersweet chocolate and white pepper with a bright, exhilarating finish.”

Guidelines for submissions
The art theme should be in keeping with WSU’s roots as a land grant institution. Artists may take inspiration from the state’s viticulture and enology industry or from the wine itself.

2013 graduates may submit high-resolution art files or original art by Nov. 2. Digital submissions may be emailed to WSUAA@wsu.edu; original artwork may be mailed to the WSU Alumni Association, Lewis Alumni Centre, 123 Wilson Rd., Pullman, WA, ATTN: AE 2013 Art Contest.

Submissions should include a short artist bio (name, major, hometown, why this project interested you and the inspiration for the submitted artwork). Wine will be labeled and be available for purchase in April 2013.

The winner will be selected by a committee comprised of WSUAA chapter presidents, the winemaker, WSUAA volunteers and WBC members.
