PULLMAN, Wash. – On July 2, Washington State University will launch its fifth campus, the Global Campus. It will be the first new campus since 1989, when the campuses in Spokane, Tri-Cities and Vancouver were founded.
The new Global Campus will be technology based and located wherever there’s an Internet connection.
“The Global Campus will help Washington State University deliver premiere educational, research and training opportunities to people across the world,” said WSU President Elson S. Floyd. “This is the 21st century realization of WSU’s land-grant mission to bring education beyond campus boundaries.”
On July 2, WSU will hold a virtual ribbon-cutting and the new Global Campus website will go live.
“We’re reaching out to students and to the public in unprecedented ways to offer them the best of WSU, no matter where they live,” said David Cillay, executive director of the new campus, which will be based in Pullman.
The Global Campus will consist of these five pillars:
WSU Online
WSU’s online degree program works with faculty from WSU colleges to offer eight undergraduate degrees, several master’s degrees and graduate and undergraduate certificates. WSU Online offers registration, student support, tech support, academic advising, eTutoring and career counseling. With about 3,100 students, it was recently named one of the nation’s top five online degree programs. WSU Online is adding several new features to coincide with the launch of the campus:
- Staggered accelerated sessions to provide more options for busy students and decrease time to degree completion
- New online proctoring services for exams
- Several new degrees, including a master’s degree in sport management and a B.S. in psychology
Digital Academy
The Digital Academy offers a variety of noncredit online learning opportunities. It partners with WSU faculty and other experts to create university-quality educational materials, such as certificate courses for working professionals and a wide variety of free interactive seminars for students.
Global Connections
Like the other WSU campuses, the Global Campus will include more than academic programs. The new campus will include online career fairs, a digital pavilion where students can showcase their research, and a common reading program. “Our goal is to create a true campus experience,” Cillay said.
eLearning Services
eLearning Services provides best practices for technology mediated instruction, services that improve the educational experience for students and faculty, and a welcoming environment where faculty can explore new tools and methodologies.
Conference Management
The campus includes a conference management unit, which organizes 40-50 educational conferences a year, bringing experts together both virtually and face-to-face.
“The global campus will help to drive economic development in the areas of the state hardest hit by the recent economic downturns,” Floyd said. “This new Global Campus brings the world to WSU, and the incredible resources of WSU to the world.”
