
CHAMPAIGN-URBANA, Ill. Mountaineer Ed Viesturs is one of five people who have climbed Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen and the only American. Highly skilled and passionate in outdoor climbing, the Washington State University alumnus visited the University of Illinois on Monday as part of the College of Engineering’s Engineers Week.

Viesturs graduated from WSU in 1987 with a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine and also has a bachelor’s of science in zoology from the University of Washington.
Once just a hobby, Viesturs turned climbing into a full-time career. He has climbed Mount Everest seven times, Mount Rainier 208 times and after three failed attempts, recently accomplished climbing Annapurna, a section of the Himalaya Mountains.
